The Real Synsteel

Redco™ Synsteel is a special UHMW formulation designed to be “pulp-safe.” The plastic will dissolve in the kraft cooking process. It is attracted to magnets and will trip metal detectors. Synsteel’s wear and abrasion resistance exceeds virgin UHMW by a factor of two and is more dimensionally stable.

Redco™ Synsteel; however, is a proprietary formulation. Several unfortunate instances have occured where Redco™ Synsteel was specified for a job, yet the winning bidder on the job went with another similar, but inferior, material from a different supplier. This has led to underwhelming performance, increased downtime caused by the need for repair or replacement – and has resulted in disatissfied customers. Be aware that the properties of competing materials are not comparable with real Synsteel. Synsteel may be more expensive than those competitive products, but it will also outperform those materials. Specific attributes of the plastic such as abrasion resistance, specific gravity and metal content will also differ.

Whether it is Redco™ Synsteel or any other product, both salespeople and the customer have the responsibility to ensure the material used is as specified. As a speciality product with unique capabilites, ensure you get the real Synsteel.

Sharks in Siberia

Recently Redwood Plastics completed a deal to send a modifed 4-grader SharkFin Board Turning System to a mill near Irkutsk, Russia. Irkutsk is one of the largest cities in Siberia and is known as a “hub” of administration and trade. The four grader system was designed to optimize quality of grading yet increase production and reduce the physical stress on valuable grading personnel. The deal was negotiated with an international engineering consultation firm based out of North Carolina that saw value in SharkFin’s inherant advantages for the isolated mill.

The SharkFin has important benefits to remote mills such as that near Irkutsk. Its design is extremely simple, which helps keep it reliable and it works by gravity – not complicated motors or other mechanical systems that could lead to a breakdown. The system has proven its worth in decades of use, reduced injuries and increased productivity. For more information on the SharkFin system click the tab above or here.

UHMW Data

While many plastics have applications in sawmills for decades UHMW has been the most popular. An impressive package of properties, applications and cost (notwithstanding a great pulpsafe grade in Synsteel) keep UHMW as the top plastic in the industry.

While we focus on applications for this blog, we do get requests for technical information on UHMW. We wanted to provide some links to relevant data sheets you may need.

Our UHMW Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) can be found HERE.

Our UHMW Engineering Data Sheet can be found HERE.

Kraftmill Safe Plastic

Mills providing pulp have been faced with a tough situation: the benefits of plastic in mill operations is clear, yet no plastic contamination can be tolerated. Fortunately, two “pulp safe” plastic solutions have been developed to serve mills that supply pulp.

Redco™ Synsteel is a UHMW polyethylene that dissolves completely in the kraft cooking process, is magnetic and will trip metal detectors. It is useful in applications such as chip screens, wear strips and chip handling. It has the added benefit of handling twice the compressive load as regular UHMW.

Redco™ SPS 2000 is a pulp safe polyurethane, combining a low coeffecient of friction and good wear resistance while being unaffected by most greases, oils and solvents. The urethane comes in a 75D hardness, and is therefore one of the most widely used urethane hardnesses. It is primarily used in wear and lining applications.

Knowing that plastics are available to assist pulp supplying mills is important for maintenance managers to solve various issues they face. Synsteel and SPS 2000 provide the tools those maintenance managers need.

Sprocket Solutions

Plastic sprockets in sawmills are a tested and valuable solution that reduces wear on chain and equipment while also reducing noise and downtime. Plastic sprockets come in several types including “Snap-it”, mill chain, drive andsprocket-closed traditional bolt-on or split. Snap-it sprockets are the cheapest and are very easy to install, a video can be found here. However, snap-it sprockets are only appropriate for idler applications. Snap-its (and our split sprockets) function with H-78, H-130, C-188 and 81X chains.

Split sprockets can handle drive applications are are made of robust Redco™ 750 urethane. One of the hardest and most popular urethanes, 750 is an ideal sprocket material.

A summary of the benefits provided by plastic sprockets in mills:

-Reduced wear

-Cost effective

-Reduced downtime

-Increased production

-Decreased noise

Deadplate = Equipment Life

Redco™ polyurethanes come in a variety of hardnesses useful in many sawmill applications. Our hardest urethanes are used in bearings and sprockets in many sawmills. However, just as popular is our softest urethane: 52A durometer “Deadplate”. Deadplate serves one purpose very well – it absorbs shock and stops kinetic energy flat. As a softer elastomer, Redco™ Deadplate has full rebound properties and will regain its shape no matter how much it is compressed. It is designed to spend its life taking a huge beating, absorbing energy, eliminating rebound and prolonging your equipment’s life. That’s what it does, that’s all it does. It might not be the most “glamorous” job – but it does it very well.

In sawmills, impact is a major issue with logs pounding against equipment. This can eventually lead to damage and other problems caused by rebound, not to mention the noise of logs hitting metal. In conjunction with our manufacturer, we can produce Redco™ Deadplate to-order in whatever profile you might need. Check out this short YouTube video showing our Deadplate at work:

We can provide samples of the material for your review and would be glad to answer any questions you might have on  Redco™ Deadplate.

Titanium Strength UHMW

UHMW is an essential plastic in top-producing saw/planermills and within that family of plastic Redco™ Titanium is the ultimate in strength, slide and toughness. Across every dimension the material outperforms regular UHMW and also has the lowest thermal expansion of all UHMWs as an added advantage, making installation simpler and more precise. Titanium UHMW works great as a liner, in conveyors, chutes, wear guides and even as truck liner. The material solves many issues in abrasion and wear, excelling in situations where regular UHMW may struggle.titanium-log-deck-200

One of the most important applications is as chain channel. Providing an even slipperier surface, Titanium chain guide will outperform the standard yellow UHMW channel and will further reduce your costs and power requirements. When deciding between regular and Titanium chain channel do not just consider the advantages Titanium’s properties provide but also factor in the benefits of increased production you will enjoy with less maintenance downtime.

Titanium is available in standard 4′ x 10′ sheeting in standard thicknesses from 1/8″-2″ and has a smaller cost premium than you would expect. Redco™ Titanium is an investment that will help ensure you maximize production and minimize downtime at your mill.
