But how do you as a mill manager or maintenance manager know if you’re utilizing all the benefits plastics can offer your mill? Redwood Plastics representatives are well-regarded for their knowledge of sawmill applications and we do get invited to perform audits of sawmills: to check what you are using, question you on maintenance or production issues, and offer recommendations where Redco sawmill products would benefit your production and reduce downtime.

Each audit would need to be considered on a case-by-case basis and the ability to perform an audit is contingent on the representative’s availability, personal discretion and geographic location. Even if we cannot visit, our reps are well-trained to ask the right questions over phone or email to ascertain where we might benefit your operations best.

Why Switch To Plastic Sprockets?

Plastic sprockets primarily made of Redco 750 have widespread use in the sawmill industry. Metal sprockets have been available long before plastic and some mills still hold out on switching to plastic. The question gets brought up “why would I want to switch to plastic?” First of all, plastic sprockets will reduce wear on the chain. When your chain has a longer lifespan you will need to spend less money on chain. Secondly, plastic sprockets cut down on noise which is important where noise limits may be in place. The sprockets are designed to be very quick to install and the old sprocket can be removed, with the new sprocket installed and ready to go, over a coffee break. Made of engineering plastic, the sprockets will not rot, rust or corrode.

These sprockets can come in severals forms. They can be supplied solid or split for idler applications; however, existing metal drive sprockets can be coated with polyurethane to supply the same wear and noise saving benefits of the fully urethane sprockets, yet have the strength needed for a drive sprocket. Solution Spotlight: Redco Carry-Over Wheels

Redco Carry-Over wheels are designed to bridge the gap between chain runs in sawmill and planar mill applications. The wheel is made of two separate components that are changeable: the tire and the hub. The hub can be made of Redco polyurethane, but metal hubs can also be resurfaced with a polyurethane tire. If Redwood Plastics supplies a plastic hub, it can be keyed according to the customer’s specifications. The tires themselves can vary in width (usually 2-1/4″ or 3″) and are made of 70A or 80A urethane. Common OD’s of wheels that can be supplied are 10″-16″.

Solutions In Action!

We can talk all we want about different plastic applications in sawmills but you really need to see them in action as words just cannot do them justice. Quoting A Sharkfin Board Turning System

The Sharkfin board turning system is a throwback to the benefits of simplicity. The system does not require any electricity, and is instead powered by the sawmill chain and gravity alone. This makes the system a consistent and popular product, especially for hardwood mills. But quoting a system can be daunting as customers often do not know what information is actually required for Redwood Plastics to quote. This is unfortunate, since if we have the required information a quote can easily be supplied within 1 business day. Here is what we need to get you that quick, and accurate, quotation:

1.) The length of your grading table (measure from center of sprocket to center of other sprocket)

2.) The number of chain runs

3.) Number of graders you have

4.) All sizes of lumber you process

5.) Number of boards-per-minute you run

6.) Pitch (number chain links between lugs)

Of the above only “pitch” is something that you might be unsure of. But all you need to do is specify what your lug pattern is now. If you still need more assistance with this, our rep can help if he/she has the other information available.

UHMW In Sawmills: Making The Grade

UHMW-PE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) simply known as “UHMW” is the most prolific industrial plastic in many sawmills and has a long history of success in many applications. Along with grades readily available from most plastic distributors, sawmills also utilize several grades where their primary use is in sawmill applications. The following is a primer on the different grades available and any strengths and weaknesses worth noting:

Reprocessed-black:

The lowest cost grade of UHMW and is widely used as wear strip. UHMW provides around 80% of the properties of natural at a reduced cost. Its weakness would be that it obviously has less physical properties and can have difficulty thermoforming properly.

Natural (white or black):

Natural is the baseline grade of UHMW and used almost anywhere UHMW can be found. It is important to note that the white natural is not UV stabilized, so using it outdoors is not optimal.

Redco Titanium:

Titanium is the ultimate grade of UHMW – the slickest, strongest, most dimensionally stable and is UV-resistant. Titanium is a premium option and does particularly well as wear strip and chain channel insert. Its only drawback would be price and availability on certain sheet/rod/tube profiles.

Tivar 88/Tivar 88-2:

While primarily a hopper lining material, Tivar 88 is cross-linked for increased strength, weldable (Tivar 88-2), and UV-stable. It pops up in various applications including sharp chain bed.

Yellow/Clean/Repro:

The “clean” means no visible UHMW regrind in the recycled material and it is colored yellow. This material shows up most often as the standard chain channel insert grade but is also available in other colors (such as orange).

Redco Synsteel:

The best “pulp-safe” UHMW on the market with an excellent metal content and ratio. It is metal detectable and exists to avoid contamination issues in pulp mills. Synsteel has been adapted to a number of applications outside of the sawmill industry especially as fenders, mud flaps, and other heavy-duty UHMW applications.

The Top 3 Reasons To Use Plastics In Sawmills

There are hundreds of plastic applications in sawmill and planar mills and these applications have been developed over many decades. It’s one thing to just highlight each application but it’s also good to take a step back, look at the big picture and ask yourself why plastics should be selected over metal at all? While the benefits and advantages of plastic differ in each application – there are three general advantages of plastic:

1.) Plastics outwear metal

This is both one of the most important advantages of plastics, and regrettably, one of the most misunderstood properties of the material. It’s safe to assume most people first experience plastics in consumer items. Plastic bags, disposable food containers and breakable toys. However, the relatively weak properties of consumer plastic vs. high-quality industrial plastic used in mills are very different. In wear guides, as bushings, or sprockets or numerous other mill applications – plastic will outwear metals such as bronze and babbit and outwear them significantly. A lifespan increase of 2-4x is common. This improves productivity and reduces downtime.

2.) Plastics save on energy costs

Plastics save on energy costs in two ways, both largely unknown by the public. Firstly, in many sawmill applications the low coefficient of friction that many plastics have mean that, particularly in applications involving drive chain, plastics will mean less horsepower and energy is required to move the chain. This can result in substantial energy savings. Also, take for example the SharkFin product: unlike other board turning systems, the SharkFin is powered by gravity alone and doesn’t need a single joule of electricity to function.

An even less known fact about plastic is that plastic takes less energy than metal to produce. This means that for each part you swap out for industrial plastic, you are also helping the environment.

3.) Plastics do what metal can’t

Sometimes metal just simply doesn’t work well in an application. Consider this case study, you’re a maintenance manager at a sawmill that has recently been cited for exceeding noise limits. Is there any way to make your metal sprockets less noisy? Is there any metal alternative to our Deadplate shock absorbing urethane? If you require impact-resistant safety “glass” in a booth…What metal will be transparent? Sometimes a metal solution simply does not exist. But plastics can provide a viable solution for problems that no metal, no matter the price, can solve.

Shock, Vibration and Noise

A few weeks ago the Vicksburg Post in Vicksburg, MS ran a story following Anderson-Tulley Lumber Co. Maintenance Manager Mike Williams through a typical work day and asked him about the challenges he faced in the mill. The article describes the noise and vibration of the modern mill – something we know our readers would be well accustomed to! Safety mandates include the use of earplugs and safety-yellow coloring added to many of the walkways. These are common issues I’m sure you’re all aware of. Plastics can play a major roll in reducing the impact shock and vibration have on mill equipment. The Redco dissipater channel is a complete product (steel channel with bonded urethane in between) that absorbs the shock of logs falling onto the deck. It helps to eliminate operator booth vibration, extend the life of concrete foundations, and extend chain and conveyor lifecycle. Redco “Deadplate” is another shock absorbing product meant to greatly increase equipment life by reducing shock. The Deadplate is bolted into any areas logs impact and absorbs the shock, saving the equipment wear and vastly reducing noise.

Several other plastic applications assist with shock, noise and impact: Redco wearplate made of UHMW polyethylene helps reduce the noise of metal on metal contact and is a proven alternative to AR plate. Redco 9600 impact bearings have much better shock absorption properties vs. metal and will last much longer in slow speed, high impact applications. The same goes for plastic sprockets which outlast metal while being much quieter.

In short, plastics offer many advantages over metal in sawmill applications and will help to reduce shock, vibration and noise thus reducing your downtime, providing for a safer environment, and ultimately: more profit.

Phenolic Kiln Cart Bushings

We’ve discussed previously the applications cast nylon has as kiln cart bushings both the regular blue bushings and the Redco hi-temp yellow advanced bushings that have gained some real traction in the marketplace. However, certain kilns need something even stronger: a bushing to handle very heavy, waterlogged hardwoods and especially for applications where kiln carts are stacked. In this case, the bushings can be machined out of industrial laminate (commonly known as “phenolic” or sometimes “Micarta”).

An industrial laminate is essentially a sandwich of layers of substrate (paper, glass, canvas) with a plastic resin binder that melds together under very high pressure. Once complete, the plastic is a thermoset and cannot be separated (if made by a quality North American manufacturer).

This results in a material with incredible strength and high-temperature endurance. Phenolic kiln cart bushings can handle loads around 30,000lbs per cart, are self-lubricating, and long-wearing. They are more expensive than the nylon bushings but they’re often the only reasonable choice. For more information – Contact Redwood Plastics.
